Mr. Burrell

We began our "Book Talk" today with two presentations. They did a great job and stay tuned for pictures!

We have a full five days and are looking ahead to the upcoming grade 2 assessment in May.

Reading - Students are working toward story comprehension. We continue to use a variety of story types like comics, fiction, non-fiction and poetry to build our understanding of text. Students are asked to read a passage 2 times then answer multiple choice questions relating to the text. We ask that they go back into the story and underline the answer.

Writing – We have begun our unit on Procedural / How- to writing. Last week the students made pizzas and then had the opportunity to create a how-to book about their experience. In the upcoming weeks we will continue with hands on activities to help with their procedural writing. (This week all students will plant flowers)

Math – We are wrapping up our unit on addition and subtraction this week. Students are continuing to develop and work toward a variety of strategies. For example, we are using tens to add and subtract double digit numbers. (54 + 32 can be rewritten to 54 + 30 + 2). Our next unit is Geometry,

Book Talk – Book Talk presentations will begin on Wednesday April 24th and will continue all week. If you have any questions please let me know.

Jump Day Kickoff – On Monday students will have a jump rope presentation in the gym.

Our April Book Talk Project are due next Wednesday ( Apr 23).

We will begin presentations On Wednesday and continue with Thursday and Friday.

If you have any questions, or need assistance please let me know.

We have sent home an interest inventory with all our students. We would like you to take a few minutes to read, discuss, and answer these questions with your child and return the form to school tomorrow (Thursday). We realize this is short notice, but we would like to have this information heading into our Professional Learning session on Friday.

Thanks for your support!

Students are bringing home their Show What You Know Folders. Inside you will see their latest publisjed piece from April.

They have wrapped up a unit on informative/fact writing and will now be creating How-To Books (procedural writing).
