Mr. Burrell

Another short, but busy week.

As you probably heard we started a pond enrichment unit last week. This will last for the remainder of the year. We will learn about life cycles of pond plants& animals and experience some life cycles first hand. We will be completing research projects in class. We make this unit stretch across the curriculum as much as possible so we will be doing pond activities for math, literacy, art, PE, and YYW. This has proved to be LOTS of fun and keeps students engaged through the last few weeks of school.

Our provincial literacy assessment starts this week. The students will work on this during their usual literacy time. There is a number of reading comprehension passages to complete and all students much complete a piece of writing. For this week and next you can support your child by making sure they are getting to bed on time (which I know can be a struggle this time of year) and encouraging them to work hard to complete the assigned tasks. The students are well prepared to be successful with this provincial assessment.

In math we are learning about 3-D objects through mini-lessons and hands on activities in math work stations. We are also still working on quick recall on facts to 20. Many students are still struggling in this area. We encourage you to use xtra math and card games to practice this skill with your child.

For an art activity students will need an old CD. If you any any old cd's (or DVD's) at home and can send them into school l we would appreciate it.

Mr. Carragher wrapped up his internship last week. The students will miss him as he did a great job.

Don't forget about library and team t-shirts on Friday. :-)

Have a great week and don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

We are going for a Nature Walk tomorrow (May 17) to Hyla Park from 12:50 – 1:40.

Please have your child dress for the weather.

There will be a sock hop tomorrow (Thursday, May 9th) during lunch recess. The K - 2 students can go dance in the gym from 12:20 - 12:50 for $1.00.

A reminder to parents that we have our Celebration of the Arts on May 8th at 6:00 at BPS.

Students in K-2 Choir and Vioilin will be performing.

This week is a full week of classes for the students - we will be very busy this week.

In Math we are learning about shapes and objects. There are lots of hands on activities in this unit. We will still be revisiting some of the outcomes on addition & subtraction based on the results from the post-assessment.

In writing we are working on completing an independent piece of writing. Students will write, edit and publish this week and we will have an author celebration on Friday.

For reading we are really pushing comprehension. Some students are really struggling with this. There is a website on our teacher page where students can practice this type of activity on-line from home.

Jump Rope for Heart - pledges should be sent to school Tuesday or Wednesday. Our jump day is on Friday in the tennis court at noon.

Sunny Weather - now that it is warmer weather students need to be dressing for that type of weather. Hats are a good idea to keep the sun off. Also, students should not be wearing tank tops.  .

BINGO Card - Have your seen the activity bingo card in your child's homework duotang? If you did not get one please let us know.

Show What You Know - we will be sending these home with the math post-assessment for addition & subtraction to 100 and the rubric on the book talk.

French Immersion Form - remember these are due by May 17th.

Celebration of the Arts - this is Wednesday evening. Students in K-2 choir & violin will be performing.

It is a 4 day week with no school on Friday, May 3rd.

Students have completed a unit on addition and subtraction to 100. We will continue with these outcomes two days a week through whole class and small group lessons.

Geometry - Our new unit will be on 2d shapes and 3d objects. Students will be pre-assessed on what they already know. This unit is approximately 4 weeks. Students enjoy this unit as it is very hands on. Stay tuned for a special project the students will complete in class.

Reading - Please continue to read at home each night for at least 15 minutes. To keep it fun, try a few of these helpful incentives: record your child reading, videotape them, make their own short chapter book, read on-line (jokes, funny poems etc...)

Book Talks – We will complete our book talk’s earl this week. What an outstanding job students have done with this project. Check the website for pictures.

Upcoming Dates     :   Jump Day Celebration May 10
